 A little history Judybox started making custom, built-to-order amps in 1999. Our designs were popular and like many boutique makers, we were soon overwhelmed and overbooked. Like any hand-made object, the labor costs are the biggest contributing factor to the final cost of a custom amp. We found ourselves working constantly, yet, falling ever further behind. Even though our wages were low, our prices were moving beyond the means of working musicians. In 2006 the company was reorganized. We decided to try a new approach. We set up a small production line in China, using the same methods that were used to make the great American amps of the 50's and 60's. We personally trained workers to hand wire amps just as we would do it. The workers adapted quickly to this slower, 50's style of artisan production. In fact, in many ways, it still is the 50's in China. The results are, we can now offer reliable, medium volume batches of truly, hand-wired, all tube amps at a fair price. All of our models are designed in the US and final QA, down to the component level, is done here as well. This new method, rather than outsource American jobs, actually created new jobs in both countries. A win-win. We think our new models give you 95% of the quality, tone, reliability and features of amps costing 2 to 3 times as much. We also feel these amps provide the subtle magic that only Fullerton-style, small production, hand wiring creates. |
